We believe that religious freedom is more than just the freedom to believe what you want. It is the freedom to talk about and act on your beliefs without interference from the government or others, except when necessary to protect health and safety. It also allows people with similar beliefs to form religious organizations that govern their own affairs. All of these freedoms are established in the United States through the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.” Additionally, we believe that all people, regardless of what government structure they live under, should be provided these same freedoms.
We encourage your thoughtful and respectful comments. Not everyone will agree about what religious freedom means and what rights should be extended to citizens, and that is okay. We hope to promote a meaningful dialog that will inspire everyone to give serious thought to this crucial topic.
It is the mission of Religious Freedom Under Fire to shine a light on the good that stems from religious organizations worldwide. Highlighting the humanitarian and social benefit that religious people strive to promote is the best way to emphasize the universal need for religious freedom.
